Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) has donated 50 laptops to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as part of efforts to support needy but brilliant students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The donation forms part of the bank’s regional CSR activities in support of the University’s ‘Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL) Project’.
Commenting at the handing over ceremony, Director of Retail and Business Banking at CBG, Emmanuel Nikoi said: “Evidently, COVID-19 has affected the traditional mode of teaching and learning. To curb the virus from spreading in institutions, the ideal way is to emphasize on virtual or contactless class sessions. And clearly, this cannot be achieved without digital platforms. Therefore, in line with CBG’s interest to help in wider social issues including education, we saw the need to support KNUST’s SONSOL Project to ensure smooth online academic work amid the pandemic”.
“To support this noble cause embarked on by the University’s Management in assisting needy students, we are pleased to be delivering 50 laptops”, he concluded.
Receiving the laptops, the Vice Chancellor of the KNUST, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, expressed her appreciation to the bank. “As the leading University in Science and Technology, we have decided to take the challenge boldly and leverage on IT tools in these COVID-19 times. Initially, we expected our students to be “hooked” on to the new approach of teaching and learning with ease, but we realized that not all of them had what it takes. Therefore, we had to make a call to support these students and we are really grateful that you came to our aid.” she added.
In her concluding remarks, Prof. Dickson said, “we recognise CBG as our main partner and cherish this relationship we have with you. Be assured that this donation will positively impact the lives of these students. We are grateful to the Board, Management, and Staff of CBG. We can’t thank you enough. Ayekoo to CBG”, she concluded.
